Awareness Essential to Prevent Mobile Addiction, Stress, Loneliness and Substance Abuse: Dheeraj Ramoul
October 10 : On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Dheeraj Ramoul, Secretary of PARAYAS Society, Himachal Pradesh, has appealed to the public to become more aware of mental health and contribute towards building a sensitive, supportive and happier society. He said that as lifestyles continue to change rapidly in the modern world, mental health challenges are also becoming increasingly significant. Therefore, prioritising mental well-being has become an important need of the hour.
Dheeraj Ramoul emphasised that mental health is just as important as physical health. Just as people make efforts to keep their bodies healthy, they must also devote time and attention to maintaining their mental well-being. Considering mental health difficulties a sign of weakness or hiding them from others does not solve the problem. People should understand their emotions, speak openly about their concerns and seek professional help whenever necessary without hesitation.
Excessive Mobile Phone Use Is a Growing Concern
Dheeraj Ramoul said that mobile phones have become an essential part of modern life. They offer numerous benefits in education, communication and access to information. However, excessive and uncontrolled use can become a matter of concern.
Spending hours on social media, watching reels late at night, becoming excessively involved in online gaming and comparing one's life with others on social media can negatively affect sleep, concentration and mental peace.
He observed that family members are often sitting together in the same room but remain occupied with their individual mobile phones instead of talking to one another. This can affect family communication and interpersonal relationships.
He therefore advised people to use mobile phones responsibly and limit screen time wherever possible. Children and young people should be encouraged to use technology positively while also making time for outdoor games, studies, social activities and meaningful family interactions.
Understanding the Various Factors Affecting Mental Health
The PARAYAS Society Secretary stated that mental health is influenced by several social, economic and personal factors, not just mobile phone use.
Continuous stress, unemployment, financial difficulties, family conflicts, loneliness, inadequate sleep, substance addiction, comparisons with others, humiliation, discrimination and excessive academic pressure on children can also affect a person's mental well-being.
He emphasised the need to understand children and young people with greater sensitivity. Children sometimes struggle to share their concerns with their parents, while young people may experience stress related to employment, their future and family responsibilities.
In such situations, instead of scolding them, comparing them with others or dismissing their problems as insignificant, parents and family members should listen patiently and try to understand their feelings.
He further stated that a smiling face does not necessarily mean that a person is happy inside. Understanding the emotions of people around us, maintaining open communication and offering support when needed are important social responsibilities.
Stay Away from Substance Abuse and Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle
Dheeraj Ramoul said that avoiding substance abuse, getting adequate sleep, engaging in regular physical activity, spending time in nature and maintaining positive relationships with family and friends are important steps towards protecting mental health.
If a person experiences prolonged stress, anxiety, sadness or other mental health difficulties that begin to interfere with daily life, they should be encouraged to consult a qualified mental health professional.
He also stressed the importance of treating people experiencing mental health challenges with sensitivity and respect. Mocking them, considering them weak or isolating them from society is unacceptable.
Seeking help when needed is not a sign of weakness. Rather, it demonstrates the courage to recognise one's situation and take steps towards improvement.
Listen to Every Individual, Respect Their Experiences and Offer Support
Referring to the theme of World Mental Health Day 2026, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” Dheeraj Ramoul said that listening to people who have experienced mental health challenges, respecting their experiences and understanding their needs are important steps towards bringing about positive change.
He appealed to the public to create an environment in homes, schools, workplaces and social groups where everyone feels safe and comfortable sharing their concerns without fear or hesitation.
By treating children, young people, women, older adults and people in need with sensitivity and respect, society can strengthen the values of mutual support, trust and understanding.
PARAYAS Society's Message
Dheeraj Ramoul said that the true progress of society cannot be measured by economic development alone. It must also be measured by whether people are able to live healthy, safe and dignified lives. Raising awareness about mental health is a collective responsibility that requires everyone's participation.
He urged people to spend some time with their families every day away from mobile phones, listen carefully to the concerns of children and young people, support those in need and help eliminate misconceptions and discrimination associated with mental health.
He said:
“Let us take a pledge this World Mental Health Day that we will never make fun of someone's struggles, that we will listen carefully to those who need support, and that we will stand by one another during difficult times. Sometimes, a little time, kindness and understanding can bring a new ray of hope into someone's life.”
PARAYAS Society's message is clear: A healthy mind, empowered youth and a compassionate society are the strong foundations of a happier future.
