Protecting Himalayan Biodiversity Is Our Collective Responsibility: Dheeraj Ramoul

Protecting Himalayan Biodiversity Is Our Collective Responsibility: Dheeraj Ramoul

International Snow Leopard Day 2026 | PARAYAS Society's Awareness Message on Environment, Water Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture

Bharog-Baneri, District Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh | 23 October 2026

Protecting the natural beauty of the Himalayas, its rich biodiversity, and its fragile mountain ecosystems is a collective responsibility. On the occasion of International Snow Leopard Day, Dheeraj Ramoul, Secretary of PARAYAS Society (Participatory Action for Rural Advancement and Youth Awareness), appealed to citizens, farmers, young people, students, and local communities to actively participate in protecting Himalayan ecosystems, wildlife, water resources, and natural habitats.

He emphasized that the snow leopard is an important part of the Himalayan natural heritage. Its conservation is not limited to protecting a rare wild animal; it is also closely connected with biodiversity conservation, the protection of natural habitats, and maintaining ecological balance in mountain regions.

Why Is Snow Leopard Conservation Important?

The snow leopard is a rare and remarkable wild cat found in the high mountains of Asia, including the Himalayan region. Habitat degradation, climate change, declining availability of prey species, and illegal hunting are among the major challenges facing its conservation.

Dheeraj Ramoul stated that protecting wildlife requires safeguarding natural habitats, conserving forests, and increasing environmental awareness among local communities.

Conserving Himalayan ecosystems is essential not only for protecting wildlife but also for preserving natural resources and ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.

PARAYAS Society's Work in Environment, Water and Agriculture

PARAYAS Society is a social organization based in District Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. The organization is currently working in the areas of environmental conservation, water conservation, agriculture, and sustainable development.

The Society believes that natural resources can be protected more effectively through community participation. Environment, water, and agriculture are closely interconnected; therefore, all three sectors must be considered together when planning sustainable rural development.

The Society's areas of work and activities include:

  • Water Conservation and Water Security: Promoting rainwater harvesting, protection of local water sources, and responsible water use among rural communities.
  • Jal Samvad: Encouraging community discussions on water-related challenges and promoting collective action for water conservation.
  • Environmental Conservation: Supporting plantation activities, protection of natural resources, and environmental awareness.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: Promoting awareness of soil conservation, efficient water use in agriculture, and environmentally responsible farming practices.
  • Climate Change Awareness: Increasing understanding of climate-related challenges and encouraging locally appropriate environmental solutions.
  • Youth and Community Participation: Engaging young people, students, Panchayats, and local communities in social and environmental initiatives.

Water Conservation and Environmental Protection Are Closely Connected

Dheeraj Ramoul highlighted that protecting forests, catchment areas, soil, and natural water sources is essential for water security in mountainous states such as Himachal Pradesh.

Rainwater harvesting, protecting local water sources, preventing water wastage, and encouraging community participation in water conservation can contribute to improved water management in rural areas.

He appealed to people to make water conservation a community priority and work together to protect local water resources for present and future generations.

Sustainable Agriculture for Stronger Rural Livelihoods

Agriculture is an important foundation of the rural economy. Maintaining soil fertility, using water efficiently, adopting farming practices suited to local conditions, and conserving traditional seed diversity are important steps towards sustainable agriculture.

PARAYAS Society emphasizes awareness of sustainable farming and natural resource conservation. Encouraging farmers and rural communities to understand environmentally responsible agricultural practices and use natural resources wisely can contribute to long-term rural development.

Protecting agricultural biodiversity and promoting the responsible use of soil and water resources are particularly important for mountain communities, where livelihoods are closely linked to local environmental conditions.

The Role of Citizens in Wildlife Conservation

The conservation of snow leopards and other wildlife can be strengthened when different sections of society participate in protecting natural ecosystems.

Every citizen can contribute by taking the following steps:

  1. Support the protection of forests and natural wildlife habitats.
  2. Raise awareness against illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking.
  3. Use water, forests, and land responsibly.
  4. Reduce plastic pollution and maintain cleanliness in local surroundings.
  5. Educate children and young people about biodiversity and environmental conservation.
  6. Participate in water conservation and environmental initiatives with Panchayats and local organizations.

Dheeraj Ramoul's Message on Conservation

Dheeraj Ramoul, Secretary of PARAYAS Society, emphasized that environmental protection should not be limited to a single day or an occasional campaign. It should become an integral part of our daily lives, community practices, and development planning.

He stated that public participation is essential for protecting Himalayan biodiversity, water sources, forests, and agricultural resources. Collective efforts by government departments, voluntary organizations, Panchayats, farmers, young people, and citizens can help strengthen natural resource conservation.

He appealed to everyone to contribute towards protecting the Himalayan natural heritage, promoting water conservation, and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices.

"Protecting the Himalayas, conserving water resources, promoting sustainable agriculture, and safeguarding biodiversity are our shared responsibilities. When nature is protected, our future is protected."

Do Not Mock Children and Individuals Who Stutter; Respect Them: Dheeraj Ramoul

On International Stuttering Awareness Day, PARAYAS Society Secretary appeals to society to promote sensitivity, support, and equal opportunities

Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, October 22: On the occasion of International Stuttering Awareness Day, Dheeraj Ramoul, Secretary of PARAYAS Society, appealed to the public to treat children, young people, and other individuals who stutter with sensitivity, understanding, and respect. He emphasized that stuttering does not determine a person's intelligence, talent, or abilities. Instead of making such individuals the subject of ridicule, society has a collective responsibility to encourage them, strengthen their confidence, and provide them with opportunities to progress in life.

Dheeraj Ramoul stated that children and individuals who stutter often face mockery, neglect, and discrimination in schools, workplaces, and social settings. Such behaviour can negatively affect their self-confidence and make them hesitant to communicate openly with others. Therefore, families, teachers, classmates, and every member of society should adopt a positive and supportive attitude towards them.

He said that stuttering is neither a limitation of a person's identity nor a measure of their abilities or personality. Everyone has an equal right to express their views, receive an education, access employment opportunities, and participate in social activities. Judging someone based on the way they speak is inappropriate and unfair.

How Should We Treat People Who Stutter?

Dheeraj Ramoul urged people to listen attentively and patiently when someone stutters while speaking. They should not interrupt the speaker, rush to complete their sentences, or imitate them to make fun of them. Instead, they should create a comfortable environment during conversations and remember that the purpose of communication is to understand what a person is saying, not to criticize the way they speak.

He particularly appealed to parents and teachers to encourage children who stutter to express themselves in classrooms, participate in cultural programmes, and showcase their talents. An environment should be created among children where no one is humiliated, excluded, or treated differently because of their speech patterns.

Timely Support and Appropriate Guidance Are Also Important

He explained that stuttering is a speech fluency disorder, and its experiences and effects can vary from person to person. If a child or an adult experiences difficulties or distress related to speaking, consulting a qualified speech-language therapist may be helpful. Family support, patient communication, and appropriate professional guidance, when needed, can contribute to improving an individual's confidence and communication skills.

Dheeraj Ramoul further stated that putting unnecessary pressure on people who stutter, repeatedly interrupting them, or embarrassing them in front of others is inappropriate. Instead, they should be given sufficient time to speak at their own pace and should be treated with dignity and respect.

Promoting Equality and Sensitivity in Society

The PARAYAS Society Secretary said that an inclusive society is one in which every individual receives respect and equal opportunities, regardless of physical, mental, or communication-related challenges. The purpose of awareness is not merely to provide information about an issue but also to bring about positive changes in people's attitudes and behaviour.

He appealed to all citizens to create an environment in their homes, schools, workplaces, and social gatherings where no one is made to feel inferior because of the way they speak. Children should be taught from an early age to understand the challenges faced by others, respect their differences, and offer support whenever needed.

Sharing his message, Dheeraj Ramoul said, "Every person's voice matters. Respect people's feelings, thoughts, and talents rather than judging the way they speak. Listen patiently to people who stutter, help build their confidence, and encourage them to move forward in life. Let us work together to build a society where no one's voice is mocked, but every voice is heard with dignity and respect."

He concluded by saying that International Stuttering Awareness Day reminds us that sensitivity, equality, and human dignity begin with our own behaviour. A more compassionate and inclusive society can be built when everyone makes a conscious effort to listen without prejudice and treat others with understanding and respect.

Bharog Baneri Takes a Step Towards Becoming a Seed Village: Padma Shri Nek Ram Sharma Champions Traditional Seed Conservation and Natural Farming

Initiative to Develop Bharog Baneri Village in Dharati Dhar into a Seed Village; Padma Shri Nek Ram Sharma Urges Farmers to Adopt Natural Farming and Preserve Traditional Seeds

Pahad Trust and RRA Network, in collaboration with PARAYAS Society, are conducting an awareness campaign in Sirmaur; an important meeting was organised jointly by PARAYAS Society and Gram Panchayat Bharog Baneri.

“Preserving traditional seeds, promoting millet cultivation and adopting natural farming are essential for a healthy future,” says Padma Shri awardee Nek Ram Sharma.

Sirmaur, October 18, 2026: With the objective of promoting natural farming, preserving the rich heritage of traditional seeds and raising awareness among farmers about sustainable agricultural practices, Pahad Trust and RRA Network, in collaboration with PARAYAS Society, are conducting awareness programmes across Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh. As part of this initiative, an important meeting was organised on Sunday at the Panchayat Bhawan in Gram Panchayat Bharog Baneri, in the Dharati Dhar region, jointly by PARAYAS Society and Gram Panchayat Bharog Baneri.

The primary objective of the meeting was to raise awareness among farmers about developing Bharog Baneri village into a Seed Village, while encouraging the conservation of traditional seeds, natural farming and millet cultivation. The related awareness activities are being carried out under the Rajiv Gandhi Prakritik Kheti Khushhal Kisan Yojana of the Department of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh. ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency), Sirmaur, has also played an important role in this initiative.

During the meeting, Padma Shri awardee and progressive farmer Nek Ram Sharma, Pahad Trust worker Sanjeev Rana, and Praveen Kumar, Block Technology Manager (BTM) from ATMA, Nahan, provided detailed information to farmers and villagers about traditional seed conservation, natural farming, the importance of millets, proper care of traditional seeds, safe storage methods and sustainable agricultural practices.

The meeting was attended by Ram Gopal Sharma, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Bharog Baneri; Rita Ramoul, BDC member; Dheeraj Ramoul, Secretary of PARAYAS Society; Naresh Kumar, Coordinator of PARAYAS Society; Ward Member Jaipal; Rangi Lal Sharma; Ram Lal Sharma; Sarita Devi; Som Prakash; Lakshmi Dutt; Guman Singh; and several other farmers and villagers.

Traditional Seeds Are an Invaluable Part of Our Agricultural Heritage: Padma Shri Nek Ram Sharma

Padma Shri awardee and progressive farmer Nek Ram Sharma, who hails from the Karsog region of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, shared his agricultural experience and explained the importance of traditional seeds, millets and natural farming to the farmers.

He stated that traditional seeds are an invaluable part of our agricultural heritage. They embody our culture, indigenous agricultural knowledge developed in accordance with local climatic conditions, and an important component of biodiversity. Farmers have preserved these seeds for generations; however, the cultivation of many traditional crops and the use of their indigenous seeds have gradually declined over time.

He emphasised that if collective efforts are not made in time to conserve traditional seeds, future generations may lose access to this rich agricultural heritage. Therefore, every farmer should identify traditional seeds available in their region, preserve them carefully and encourage their cultivation.

Mr Sharma explained the importance of proper seed care, safe storage, timely sowing and the exchange of seeds among farmers. He said that farmers could strengthen the conservation movement by preserving good-quality seeds for the next cropping season and sharing them with other farmers.

He stressed that the conservation of traditional seeds is not limited to agricultural production; it is also closely linked to our cultural identity, local biodiversity and future food security.

Emphasis on Millet Cultivation and the Traditional Nine-Grain Farming System

Padma Shri Nek Ram Sharma highlighted the importance of millet cultivation and encouraged farmers to promote indigenous grains and traditional food crops.

He explained that ragi, koda, kangni and other local grains have traditionally been an important part of the region's food culture. Promoting these crops can help maintain agricultural diversity, preserve indigenous agricultural knowledge and provide rural households with a wider variety of nutritious food.

Referring to the traditional nine-grain farming system, he explained that this method involves cultivating different types of grains and food crops together in the same field. Such mixed cropping practices can play an important role in promoting agricultural diversity and passing traditional farming knowledge on to future generations.

He urged farmers to encourage the cultivation of traditional crops suited to local conditions and familiarise younger generations with the importance of indigenous grains, traditional seeds and conventional agricultural practices.

Adopting Natural Farming Is Essential for a Healthy Life: Nek Ram Sharma

Nek Ram Sharma stated that healthy living requires agricultural practices that protect natural resources. Safeguarding soil, water and the environment is the responsibility of farmers as well as every member of society.

He emphasised the need to reduce dependence on chemical inputs in farming, maintain soil fertility and use natural resources judiciously. Adopting suitable natural farming practices according to local conditions can help make agriculture more sustainable.

He encouraged rural families to include local grains, traditional pulses, seasonal vegetables and other nutritious foods in their daily diets. He noted that traditional food cultures and agricultural practices contain several valuable elements that can be preserved to promote a healthier lifestyle.

He called upon farmers to work collectively towards protecting Mother Earth, conserving traditional seeds and promoting natural farming.

BTM Praveen Kumar from ATMA Nahan Educates Farmers on Traditional Seed Conservation

Praveen Kumar, Block Technology Manager (BTM) from ATMA, Nahan, representing ATMA, Sirmaur, addressed the farmers and provided detailed information about conserving old and traditional seeds, their proper care and safe storage.

He explained that identifying indigenous seeds, preserving them appropriately, maintaining their quality during storage and ensuring timely sowing are important aspects of seed conservation.

He encouraged farmers to collect information about traditional seeds available within their families and villages and work together to preserve them. The exchange of traditional seeds among farmers can help maintain local agricultural diversity.

In the context of the initiative to develop Bharog Baneri into a Seed Village, Mr Kumar also emphasised the importance of active farmer participation and mutual cooperation. He stated that coordination among farmers, Panchayat representatives, the Agriculture Department and social organisations is essential for conserving traditional seeds and encouraging their cultivation at the village level.

He added that if farmers collectively take steps to identify, conserve and cultivate traditional seeds, it would represent a significant contribution towards protecting the region's agricultural heritage.

Sanjeev Rana Raises Awareness about Natural Farming and Traditional Seed Conservation

Sanjeev Rana, a worker associated with Pahad Trust, also participated in the meeting and informed farmers and villagers about the importance of natural farming and traditional seed conservation.

He emphasised the need to increase farmers' participation at the local level, preserve traditional agricultural knowledge and raise awareness about the conservation of natural resources.

He stated that active participation by rural communities could strengthen efforts to preserve traditional seeds and promote sustainable agricultural practices. He encouraged farmers to recognise the value of indigenous seeds and local crops and take responsibility for their conservation.

Collective Initiative to Develop Bharog Baneri into a Seed Village

The initiative to develop Bharog Baneri into a Seed Village aims to preserve the village's agricultural heritage and raise awareness among farmers about the importance of traditional seeds.

During the meeting, participants discussed identifying traditional seeds of grains, pulses and other crops available in the village, encouraging their conservation and strengthening the tradition of seed exchange among farmers.

Under the Seed Village concept, local farmers can work together to preserve traditional seeds, encourage their cultivation and maintain agricultural diversity.

The meeting highlighted that active participation by farmers, support from the Panchayat, guidance from the Agriculture Department and coordinated efforts by social organisations are essential for developing a village into a Seed Village.

The meeting held at Bharog Baneri marked an important step towards raising awareness among rural communities about traditional seed conservation and sustainable agriculture.

PARAYAS Society Committed to Rural Development and Sustainable Agriculture

PARAYAS Society continues to work towards promoting sustainable agricultural practices in rural areas, raising awareness among farmers, protecting the environment and ensuring active participation by rural communities.

Through this awareness initiative conducted by Pahad Trust and RRA Network in collaboration with PARAYAS Society, and the meeting organised jointly with Gram Panchayat Bharog Baneri, a strong message was conveyed about the importance of safeguarding local agricultural heritage.

The programme emphasised that preserving traditional seeds, promoting millet cultivation, adopting natural farming and protecting the natural resources of Mother Earth are collective responsibilities.

Collective efforts by farmers, women, youth, Panchayat representatives, the Agriculture Department and social organisations can make a significant contribution towards passing traditional agricultural knowledge on to future generations and promoting sustainable agriculture.
